The House Carpenter

Well met, well met, my own true love
Well met, well met, cried she

{起笔突兀,既是真爱,缘何又是偶遇?女人的惊奇为后面埋下伏笔}
I've just returned from the salt, salt sea
And it's all for the love of thee
I could have married a King's daughter there
She would have married me
But I have forsaken my King's daughter there
It's all for the love of thee

{男人自述,仍然奇怪,似乎是远走他乡,辛苦不寻常,终于求得富贵功名,但是得到后却又忘却不了,只好返回来寻找失去的东西。短短几句话,只交代了结果,前面的情节是两个深爱对方的人如何这般了呢?是父母之言,还是负气远走,亦或心高气傲?无论如何,终究还是回来了}

{以上为第一节“起”,突兀有回味}

Well, if you could have married a King's daughter there
I'm sure you're the one to blame
For I am married to a house carpenter
And I'm sure he's a fine young man

{女人的这段话责备自己,说自己的木匠很好,好比说你人很好,不过…口吻有点曲意求全,继续伏笔}

Forsake, forsake your house carpenter
And come away with me
I'll take you where the green grass grows
On the shores of sunny Italy

{男人开始引诱,并给出自己的承诺}

{第二节“承”}

So up she picked her babies three
And gave them kisses, one, two, three
Saying "take good care of your daddy while I'm gone
And keep him good company."

{行吟诗人以第三者口吻叙述情节的发展,没有以女人的角度来回复男人的引诱。有了前面的伏笔,女人的决定也不显得不可理解,虽然仔细想来有点奇怪,特别是还有孩子,对孩子的柔情}

Well, they were sailin' about two weeks
I'm sure it was not three
When the younger of the girls, she came on deck
Sayin' she wants company

{为了爱情,真的可以舍弃一切吗?即便如是,也有很多问题需要面对}

{第三节“转”}
"Well, are you weepin' for your house and home?
Or are you weepin' for your babies three?"

"Well, I'm not weepin' for my house carpenter
I'm weepin' for my babies three."

{隙罅已生}
Oh what are those hills yonder, my love
They look as white as snow
Those are the hill of heaven, my love
You and I'll never know

{男人开始失望,但是仍有一点柔情。know古英语似乎是??}
Oh what are those hills yonder, my love
They look as dark as night
Those are the hills of hell-fire my love
Where you and I will unite

{男人终于发现过去了的就不再可能回来,决定一劳永逸地解决问题}

Oh twice around went the gallant ship
I'm sure it was not three
When the ship all of a sudden, it sprung a leak
And it drifted to the bottom of the sea

{歌者以第三者讲述结尾,船沉人亡,没说船为什么沉没,风高浪急,殉情,还是男人的沈挚阴狠?}

{第四节,“合”,黑暗压抑,没有一点希望}

Nickel Creek

Well met, well met, said an old true love
well met, well met, said he
I have just returned from the salt, salt sea
and its all for the love of thee
come in, come in, my own true love
and have a seat by me
its been three-fourths of a long, long year
since together we have been
i cant come in and i cant sit down
for i've only a moments time
they say youre married to a house carpenter
and your heart will never be mine
i could've married the kings daughter fair
and she would've married me
but i have forsaken, her crowns of gold
and it's all for the love of thee
now will you forsake your house carpenter
and come go with me
i'll take you where, the grass grows green
on the banks of the deep blue sea
then she picked up her darling little babe
and kisses she gave it three
saying stay right here you darling little babe
and keep your papa company
they had not been on the ship two weeks
i'm sure it was not three
til this true love began to weep and to mourn
and she wept most bitterly
saying are you weeping for my silver and my gold?
saying are you weeeping for my store?
or are you weeping, for your house carpenter
whose face you'll never see no more?
a curse, a curse, to the sailor, she cried
a curse, a curse, she swore
you robbed me of the darling little babe
that i shall never see no more
they had not been on the ship three weeks
i'm sure it was not four
when there came a leak, in the bottom of the ship
and sank them for to rise no more
